A decent whiting for day afloat

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - Todd Cochrane

I do a lot of fishing off Melbourne, either in the bay or out in the ocean. We have a 6m boat and we go out a lot.

We are mainly catching gummy shark and snapper, they’re our favourites.

One of the best fish I’ve caught was a 5½ foot gummy shark. We catch one most trips we go on.

Sometimes we get the odd whiting and flathead.

Actually I caught a really good whiting a few weeks ago. It was 55 cm which is one of the biggest we’ve seen.

Usually they don’t get that big, or at least we don’t catch them if they do.

I caught that big one with a little bit of prawn.

We were in the bay just next to the Philip Island bridge. It was just on dusk and we were about to go home but

I just had one last cast and as I was winding I pulled in this very decent fish, just off the banks about 100 metres off shore.

We cooked it up for dinner – it was real nice, it fed a few of us.
