Home club takes honours in the Sugar Festival
LIFE couldn’t get any sweeter for the Mossman Bowls Club after their home teams cleaned up at the annual Sugar Festival over the weekend.
Teams gathered from Cooktown, Mareeba, Dimbulah, Atherton, Yungaburra, Malanda, Herberton, Ravenshoe and Cairns to play on the best green in the Far North.
Mossman Bowls men’s president Eric Smith said the competition was fantastic.
“It was played with great sportsmanship and rivalry,” he said.
“We had such a good and successful weekend and it was great to see everybody enjoying themselves”.
The Mossman men were on their game, taking out the top four spots.
“In the past we haven’t done so well but in the men’s we’ve picked up quite a few bowlers in recent times and they’re coming along well and the strength of our bowling and our club has improved considerably,” Smith said.
Mossman Bowls Women’s president Carole Maxted said the whole festival went really well with 52 ladies attending.
“I was very pleased with the way the day went and everybody seemed to enjoy it,” she said.
“My team actually won on Friday which was a nice surprise”.
The Classic Fours in Mossman is one of the biggest event for the men’s coming up on October 14-15, with the total prize money being $6000.
The Mossman ladies are looking forward to the Bamboo Festival in Yungaburra on September 5.
Thursday’s game of ladies graded pairs resulted in a win for Barbara May and Margaret Cooper over Janice Brlyack and Trish Arnold. The final is to be played today (24th) between Barb and Margaret against Christie Colley and Angie Fleming.
More than 50 ladies played in the Sugar Festival. The spiders were won by Margaret Cooper and A Phillips. The winning teams were - Encouragement Bev Zillfleisch, Carmen Bolton, B Lloyd and L O’Brien. Third place - Denise Highland, E Thompson and D Cornwall. Second - Y Mileviski, A Phillips, M Johnson and J Knight. Winners - Carole Maxted, Trish Arnold, A Thomas and G Cole. Men’s Jackpot bowls on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th is Handicap singles with Eric Smith (-5) verses George Wilmot (+3).
