Julatten’s scaly focus

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - @SCHOOL -

STUDENTS at Julatten State School participated in special science sessions last week to celebrate Science Week and scientific learning.

Students attended a Reptile Awareness and Safety Presentation to promote alertness about snakes.

This was timely since reptiles have been more visible and aggressive with the recent warm weather each day.

Chris O’Dowd from Cooyabased Venture Deeper demonstrated the correct emergency treatment for snake bite and shared information about pythons and elapids with excited students and interested adults.

Chris brought a variety of snakes with him that he allowed students to observe and touch, so that information is shared and understandings developed.

Chris confesses that he loves snakes and is keen to share his knowledge and appreciation with eager learners. Chris also provides snake relocation services in our local area.

Our Scientist in School, Mr Fred worked with classes in Science Week to explain night and day, the solar system and beyond. Mr Fred also demonstrated to students how to measure sound waves and their frequency.
