Busy weeks ahead for Dou­glas

THOU­SANDS of peo­ple will be cy­cling, pad­dling and fish­ing around Port Dou­glas and Dain­tree over the com­ing weeks.

The Trop­i­cal Jour­neys Great Bar­rier Reef Marathon (GBRM) is run this week­end, with more than 2000 run­ners ex­pected, rep­re­sent­ing 17 dif­fer­ent coun­tries.

The 10th Mar­lin Coast Chal­lenge run by the Port Dou­glas Outrig­ger Ca­noe Club will also take place this month on October 28.

Pad­dlers start at Yorkey’s Knob, Cairns and re­lay teams will cover 45kms in four legs up to Port Dou­glas. The race is de­signed for both the ex­pe­ri­enced and novice pad­dler, with changeovers at beaches between the two cen­tres.

Prepa­ra­tions are also well un­der­way for the an­nual Port Dou­glas Mar­lin Chal­lenge from Novem­ber 9-12.

The boats for the tour­na­ment come from as far south as Syd­ney, while the com­peti­tors travel from around Aus­tralia, the US and Asia to com­pete.
