Bright Sparks puts mozzies on notice

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - Daniel Bateman

THE inventor of a new mosquito trap claims he has not been bitten by mozzies at his Freshwater home since he started trialling the device two years ago.

Michael Sparks has patented his Larvae-Tar trap to catch and kill mosquitoes, before they are able to mature.

The simple ovitrap, comprised of overlapping coneshaped plastic containers, attracts mosquitoes who lay their eggs in sitting water.

The eggs hatch into larval mosquitoes, which then swim downwards and eventually become trapped, unable to escape the container.

Mr Sparks, who is planning on selling his traps at Rusty’s Markets, said he had been thinking about new ways to control mozzies, for about 40 years. “Water was the secret. “Mosquitoes need freshwater, and if you can control that cycle, then you can control the mosquito.”

The retired builder has tested his Larvae-Tar in his backyard for about two years, and has trials in place at his neighbours’ homes for several months. ONCE more the drums are beating with tales tall and true of life in the barmy tropics . . .
