Entsch lashes government on power prices

LEICHHARDT MP Warren Entsch has told parliament residents of the Far North are being treated like cash-cows when it comes to electricity.

In a 10-minute speech on Tuesday night, he tore shreds off the state government for ignoring a Queensland Competition Authority warning that Ergon Energy must be forced to compete with new retailers.

“The state Labor government is addicted to the revenue the state-owned generators and retailers provide it,” he said.

“They are unashamedly gouging family households, businesses and manufacturers in my electorate and taxing them by stealth.”

Mr Entsch said consumers were paying the price.

“The Queensland Labor government proudly spruik they own the generators, distribution networks and retailers,” he said.

“But they have repeatedly demonstrated they have no interest in creating competition in the market.

“Why would they? By having control over these vertically-integrated behemoths they have an unlimited ATM called the Queensland taxpayer.”
