Outriggers compete at Kawana
KAWANA Waters at the Sunshine Coast was the venue for this year’s National Outrigger Canoe Sprint Titles. The threeday event also doubled as qualifying for the world championship in Tahiti this year.
Local athletes Mike Schuck, Ingrid Juchem and Lee Foster entered the two single events, OC1 and V1 (a traditional outrigger canoe without a rudder) over 500 metres.
In a thrilling Senior Master Men OC1 final, Lee Foster was battling it out with a paddler from Burrun OCC. A late push to the finish line from Lee secured him third place in his first sprint final.
Ingrid Juchem, joining the Sydney crew from Koa Kai, for the weekend placed third in the Senior Master V12 (two sixman canoe hulls rigged together) and fifth in the 500 metre OC6, missing out on the finals of the single events
Mike Schuck, after a strong run in his heat, just missed out on the final of his V1 race.,
The club is gearing up for their “come and try day” on Sunday, February 25.
