Sharks thump Ivanhoes
Mossman looking to challenge top Cairns team
THE Mossman/Port Douglas Sharks have improved dramatically since their last encounter with one of CDRL’s top sides Cairns Brothers, who they face on Saturday.
Last time the two teams faced off Brothers came out on top but not without a fight from the Sharks.
Mossman coach Jason Chilman said the boys will have to put in all their effort.
“We’re going in with a game plan, if we do the right things
in defence we can score points off the back of that,” he said.
“We’ve seen their playing style and we can prepare for that. Brothers have a good defence but if we find their weak points and break those edges we should be able to put points on the board.
“We will just have to be on our game in both our forward and back line.
“Brothers are a tough side, they’re contenders for the premiership but we’re up for challenging that.”
Jason said the whole team has gelled and he’s seen a lot of self-improvement from individual players.
Last weekend the Ivanhoes copped a thrashing from the Sharks, 56 to 10.
“I didn’t expect the margin to be that big.
“I was quietly confident we were going to win but the boys came in and blew them off the park,” Jason said.
“Our forwards muscled up and Noel Underwood played great in the backline and Stanley Anau did what he does best.”
Coach Chilman said coming off such a win has fired up the team for this weekend.
The Sharks fielded five reserve players to fill missing spots due to injuries last week.
“We brought Lyle Murgha up and all the whole team we fielded on that day got the job done,” Jason said.
“The Reserves are doing really well, the whole club is.
“A lot of previous players who won the premiership, at the reunion last week, said it’s been a while since Mossman has been in the top five, especially so late in the season.
“It all comes down to the hard work of the team and now we’re back in third place on the ladder, I hope we can stay there.”
