DOUGLAS boaties can finally breathe a sigh of relief as plans to upgrade Newell Beach boat ramp are in motion.

The State Government plans to fork out up to $4 million towards a new two lane ramp.

The solution doesn’t include dredging, which was one of the larger local issues at the last State elections, with One Nation also weighing in.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has designed the ramp to extend towards where the river is naturally deep.

Member for Cook Cynthia Lui said the plan is a win-win.

“This is a great outcome as it will avoid the need and associated impacts of ongoing dredging,” she said.

“Locals in the Newell Beach area have been lobbying for a long time for improved boating access and I am delighted that this project is now coming to fruition.

“The concept includes a new two-lane boat ramp, floating walkway and rock groyne on the upstream side of the ramp.”

Planning for the project is ongoing and a draft concept is being developed and further hydrological modelling and environmental investigations will support the final design.
