Rapist gets more time behind bars
A CONVICTED rapist has had more time added to his 14year sentence for attacking a correctional officer.
Derice Raymond Bert Amber was high on ice when he forced his way into a Mossman home and sexually assaulted a sleeping mother while her child was nearby in August 2016. He had been released from jail just two days prior and was jailed last year.
Judge Julie Dick described the rape as a “degrading, horrifying experience”, and said prospects of Amber’s rehabilitation were low. Just five weeks into the term Amber lashed out unprovoked against a corrective services officer at Stuart Correctional Centre in Townsville.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Sean Janes said Amber was being escorted to a secure unit on December 6, 2017, and was walking slightly ahead of the guard when he turned around and punched him in the face.
The guard lost a part of a tooth and suffered pain and discomfort from the blow. The 22-year-old pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court earlier this year.
Magistrate Jeff Clarke ordered Amber have ninemonths added to his sentence.
He won’t be eligible for parole until February 2, 2028.
