Green light for $1m MLC pool
Methodist Ladies’ College is after $1million to help build a new pool.
Claremont councillors gave the green light to the 25mx40m heated pool on Tuesday night after school principal Marie Perry s a i d i t was s o r e l y needed.
A sticking point for councillors was more traffic from interschool events being generated by a new pool.
“Repairs are not viable any longer,” Dr Perry said about MLC’s existing 50m pool, north of the Great Court.
“We’re hoping to complete major earthworks [for the new pool] over the Christmas break.”
Dr Perry said MLC was working with neighbouring Christ Church Grammar School on the new pool.
The new pool would be next to Christ Church’s 50m pool and both would be surrounded by a fence.
Dr Perry said the MLC pool would be predominantly used for lap training and water polo.
Councillor Jill Goetze said because the new pool was replacing the leaking 56-year-old facility, it wasn’t a new pool.
“There will be no increase in parking requirements,” Ms Goetze said.
Councillor Sara Franklyn said she was very keen to see children’s sport promoted.
Councillor Chris Mews said he could support the school’s plans, thanks to amended conditions.
“Any development mustn’t inconvenience the surrounding ratepayers,” he said.
“The schools don’t pay rates.” The conditions include getting an OK for “minor inter-school” events – no more than threehours long, and attended by no more than four schools.
Another condition was major inter-school events or external clubs or organisations needing council approval to use the new pool.
In MLC’s latest edition of its bi-annual magazine Strive, the school asked for $1million in donations to “green-light” the project.
Cash for splash … The MLC community have been asked to donate toa new 40mx25m pool.
