It’s been a while since Procycling had a Power List issue, too long probably. So as the 2014 season starts to gather momentum, now seems the perfect time to return to an idea last covered in August

2009. Namely, who wields the power in cycling? Our list starts on page 48 but we’re not giving the game away to reveal that the top spots are mostly populated by middle-aged, middle class white guys. After all, it’s not only a sport, it’s also an

internatio­nal business. Greying men in suits are inevitable. But what the Power List lacks in actual colour it makes up for in texture and tone. There’s a dumpling multi-millionair­e, a handful of riders with enough star power to attract unknowable amounts of sponsorshi­p, the sport’s lifeblood. Then there are coaches, designers and team managers whose back-room influence is exerted through new techniques employed on the open road.
