After lots of fiddling, I’ve now really got the Speedmax dialled in. The lower saddle height that came out of June’s bike fit actually cost me 20W so I’ve put it back. Likewise the forward cleat position and insole wedge, which led to some knee issues. I gave the changes six weeks to allow for adaptation, they just didn’t work for me. Both were worth trying as my legs certainly look too straight but the power loss was clear. It cost me some places in a few races and an even better 50 PB than the 1:46:52 I set on a fast course in July but it was still a valuable learning experience. I’ve also fitted ski bend extensions; they’re simply far more comfortable for me.

Happily I got it all sorted just in time for the National 25-mile (40km) TT Championships in early August. I had a good ride and will never be more satisfied with a 32nd place. This photo is from the Somerset Road Club’s 2-up Open 10, which team-mate Robin Coomber and I won. There was only one other pair but we were pleased to record 19:54. It was my first ever 30mph+ TT. Now I just need to work out how to do it on my own.
