TREK’S RETIREMENT PARTY
Only a handful of big names are retiring at the end of 2016, and it seems they were all riding for Trek. Fabian Cancellara, Fränk Schleck and Ryder Hesjedal, who all rode for the American team in 2016, are hanging up their wheels, with multiple Classics, World Championships, Tour top 10s and a Giro d’Italia between them. Cancellara will be the biggest absence – he maintained his form into his final year, and kept up his extraordinary record of winning at least one race every season since 2001. (That total of 16 seasons of straight wins matches Robbie McEwen’s modern record, though Tom Boonen has a chance to equal this if he wins a race before retiring in mid2017.) His Olympic time trial victory was his final masterpiece, in a long and glittering career.
