GREG VAN AVERMAET
In 2016, Greg Van Avermaet missed the crucial split on the Kemmelberg at Gent-Wevelgem. A year later he was brimming with confidence, thanks to wins in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and E3 Harelbeke, and he’d learned from his mistake. This time he instigated the move on the Kemmelberg to break up the front group, and when Jens Keukeleire attacked with 20km to go he followed, whittling the leaders down again to just five. With Sagan in their midst however, the group didn’t co-operate so the two Belgians rode clear and contested the finish. Van Avermaet led out the sprint and won.
