It’s usually on Quick Step’s native pan-flat Belgian roads we expect to see the team show what they can do in the crosswinds, rather than in a sprint stage at the Giro. But as the race moved south and then west along the Sardinian coast to Cagliari, strong winds up to 60kph wreaked havoc towards the end of the stage. Rather than hestitate, Bob Jungels moved to the front at the first sign of echelons and accelerated, taking Fernando Gaviria away in a small group with him. It was only a few seconds’ gap but it was enough to distance the other sprinters and give the Colombian a clear view of the line and the win.
