MARCEL KITTEL’S 2017 PALMARÉS
Three out of four stage wins, plus the overall title for the second year, and Kittel and his Quick Step lead-out looked formidable. The only stage he didn’t win he was boxed in, coming 11th.
ABU DHABI TOUR
Caleb Ewan looked to have the win sealed on stage two and even celebrated on the line. However, he didn’t spot the late surge from Kittel, who snatched the win, on his right.
3 DAYS OF DE PANNE
Despite crashing with 15km to go on stage 3a, Kittel recovered for the sprint. He was expertly guided through a chaotic inal, then jumped on Kristo f’s wheel before coming round him to win.
Perfectly positioned at the front behind team-mate Trentin onto the straight, Kittel began his sprint with 200m to go. No one could catch him, and he scored a record ifth victory at the race.
TOUR OF CALIFORNIA
Kittel got his irst win in California on the opening stage, beating Peter Sagan by a bike length in the sprint. Such was the speed of the irst two riders, thirdplaced Elia Viviani was well behind.
STER ZLM TOUR
After four days racing in the Netherlands, Kittel got the win on the inal stage. Quick-Step took control during the stage before he beat Groenewegen and Greipel in the sprint.
TDF STAGE TWO
The Tour started in Düsseldorf in his home country, Germany, so Kittel wanted to win. No team took control of the sprint, but Kittel surged from behind late on to open his account at the race.
TDF STAGE SIX
Despite being sat back in 12th position with 250m to go, Kittel produced an astonishing burst of speed clocked at 71kph in the inal few metres to beat Démare to the stage win.
TDF STAGE SEVEN
After a photo inish examined by the judges, just 0.0003 seconds separated Kittel from Boasson Hagen on the line. The German was awarded the win in one of the Tour’s closest inishes ever.
TDF STAGE 10
Though Groenewegan was faster, Kittel had the better positioning and timing to win through. He followed Dan McLay, who sprinted early, hit the front with 220m to go, and was clear at the line.
TDF STAGE 11
Such was Kittel’s advantage over Groenewegan he had enough time to sit up and celebrate before the line. The win took his career total at the Tour to 14, and made it ive this edition.
