The film got its start in 2010 when Thornton, an Australian of the Year nominee, met with outcry after calling out the Southern Cross symbol’s racist connotations. Here, he traces the constellation’s Indigenous and colonial history and modern interpretations, speaking with astronomers, Aboriginal Australians, rappers and tattooists.
