Five sizzling spots for a barbecue in Queensland
CENTRAL STATION FRASER ISLAND
A barbecue at Central Station may conjure images of trying to light a Weber amid a horde of commuters while the loudspeaker announces the late arrival of the 8.35 service. But this Central Station, in the heart of the world’s largest sand island, is a little different.
Once home to a logging camp, it’s now a shady picnic area, with electric barbecues, where you can take a break from the rigours of exploring Fraser.
If you’ve been four-wheel driving along 75 Mile Beach (speed limit 80 kilometres per hour), snaking around the inland tracks (speed limit 35 kilometres per hour), trekking through rainforests, sliding down sand dunes and swimming in lakes, you’re probably going to work up a healthy appetite – so don’t skimp on the snags.
Island highlights include the welcome cool of emerald-green Lake Wabby, surrounded by forest and dunes, and stream-fed Lake McKenzie, where the clearest water this side of an Evian ad is framed by a white silica sand beach.
Don’t miss The Cathedrals (spectacular coloured sand cliffs) and the Maheno shipwreck, which has been quietly rusting away on 75 Mile Beach since a cyclone blew it ashore in 1935.
Known as K’gari, or paradise, to the Butchulla people, World Heritage-listed Fraser Island is a remarkable place with wildlife that includes whales offshore and dingoes on land.
You can camp or stay in a resort, take your own vehicle or join a tour. If you fancy catching your own barbecue ingredients, bring some tackle. Freshwater fishing isn’t allowed on the island but plenty of people throw in a line off the beach. The Great Sandy Strait, between Fraser Island and the Fraser Coast, is full of fish. Head for Sandy Cape, Waddy Point or Indian Head for tailor, dart, mackerel and more.
