THE CRYING YEARS
Australia’s Great War Peter Stanley NLA Publishing This book offers a different perspective on Australia’s involvement in WWI. It looks back from the battlefields to home, where Australians grappled with the unprecedented stresses that war meted out. Historian Peter Stanley explores ‘the crying years’ – an expression taken from Zora Cross’s tribute to her soldier brother who died at age 19 – and shows how they brought out the best and the worst in people. Drawing on visual material from the National Library of Australia, and supplemented with extracts from diaries, news reports, verse and fiction, the book takes us through the battles that unfolded on Australians’ doorsteps.
