Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) directs American Made, a biographical crime thriller based on the real-life exploits of Barry Seal (played by Tom Cruise), a drug hustler and onetime TWA pilot, unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in US history, an operation that saw Seal switch successfully from drug smuggler to drug informant.

While working for the CIA, Seal provided intelligence on the infamous Colombian Medellin cartel (which supplied the bulk of cocaine smuggled into the US) and its leader, Pablo Escobar, during the peak of the 1980s cocaine-trafficking era. Seal also found himself caught up in Nicaraguan and Contra politics, which played a significant role in almost bringing down the Reagan administration through the IranContra scandal.
