Where Sofitel Tamuda Bay Beach and Spa, M’diq, Morocco

Why While mixing Côte d’Azur glamour with traditional Moroccan style may seem confusing at first, like avocado and Vegemite, it works. The Galal Mahmoud (and GM architects) designed Sofitel Tamuda Bay celebrates the French l’art de vivre, with artworks and shapes reminiscent of Matisse (and others influenced by the area), while drawing inspiration from the cobalt blues and stark whites of northern Morocco. Despite the bold colours and size of the hotel (104 rooms and suites plus bungalows and villas) there’s a sense of calm, and a kind of dreamy melding between indoor and outdoor spaces. But, the real star of the show is M’diq itself. Opening out onto golden beaches, the hotel is framed on one side by the glittering waters of the Mediterranean, and on the other, the beautiful Rif mountains. Whichever way you look you have a view that makes you want to pinch yourself to make sure you’re not dreaming. How much Room rate from $190 per night. Worth noting If you’re after complete cultural immersion, this may not be for you. Contact Sofitel.com

Where Alila Villas, Uluwatu, Bukit Peninsula, Bali Why Bali may be a quintessential beach destination, but here’s a place to rest your head that’s far from clichéd. There’s not a bamboo water feature or wooden carving in sight. Instead, clean lines, flat lava rock roofs and mercifully empty white-sand beaches abound. The 64 villas each have their own private pool, cabana and breezy open-plan design. Upgrade to a twobedroom villa for 2000 sq m of space or go all out on a 3000 sq m three-bedroom behemoth for total decadence. It’s pure indulgence, with all the aerial yoga, private dining you could want and an incredible Sunset Cabana (a platform suspended over a limestone cliff) for that must-have predinner Negroni. In fact, if it’s luxury you’re after, now is a good time to mention every villa’s private butler and 24-hour room service. This is the five-star resort other five-star resorts want to be. Best of all, there’s not a tacky souvenir in sight. How much Villas from $1320 a night for two. Worth noting 24-hour medical assistance is included in your room rate.
