FORGET ONLINE PERSONALITY TESTS – your home can reveal more of your psyche than a game of Cluedo. For Worn co-founders Lotte Barnes and Lia-Belle King, their thoughtfulness and dedication to handmade items sings from their 1900s principal’s cottage in the Byron Bay Hinterland. “We like our home to be a harmonious reflection of the environment outside, but also of our personal and locational journeys,” Lotte says. “The practice of wabi-sabi [beauty in the imperfect and incomplete] influences our aesthetic, making for a space that is humble and calm, but also artistically interesting.”
WAITING GAME When Lotte and Lia-Belle moved from Bali to their house in Clunes, they didn’t rush to deck it out. “We had to wait months for our furniture to arrive, and are still acquiring the pieces we need,” Lia-Belle says. Their advice: take it slow and don’t decorate just for the sake of it. “You’ll accumulate things over time and when a chair, vase or pot does come into your life, it will be really special.”
SCOUR THE LAND When they’re not shopping from their own range, the pair look at auction houses, eBay and vintage stores for interesting one-off pieces. “We prefer works that have been handmade or have a personal element to their creation, and purchase directly from craftsmen and artists,” Lotte says. “Like the products we make, the items we buy hold an element of integrity that you don’t find with factory-made, mass-produced items.”
OPPOSITES ATTRACT The home provides ample room for the couple to express their differing passions – Lotte’s statement artworks alongside Lia-Belle’s Art Deco furniture and crystals. “We opt for a less is more approach, adding a few statement pieces of furniture or art to bring an interesting lift to an otherwise fairly minimal scheme,” Lia-Belle says. The result is a home that is serene, uncluttered and constantly evolving with them.
