HELP WITH READING?

Rhythm - - BEAT! - Barney K, via email

Hi Rhythm, first of all just wanted to say thanks for all the great lessons in the magazine. They really give me a lot to get to grips with in my month of woodshedding. At least, the videos do… but I must admit I still struggle a little with reading drum music. I’ve read a lot in your mag that it’s a really important skill for a drummer to have, but I must admit I’m a bit unsure of how to read, not so much the notes and which instrument they relate to, but things like subdivisions and how to tell from the notation what they should be. Any chance of doing a lesson or series of lessons on reading? For anyone struggling with the basics of reading our drum notation, did you know there’ s a basic PD F guide to notation on the disc each month that should help? Reading is definitely an important skill for the working drummer to have, and useful to enthusiasts too, to not ate things for you self and read it back. I’ ll definitely look at doing something on it in an upcoming issue as it’ s been awhile since we covered it here in Rhythm. Watch this space !– CBu
