Drum stars explain why they choose SJC
How and why did you start playing SJC drums?
Josh Dun, Twenty One Pilots : “I got in contact with Mike [Ciprari] through a mutual friend around 2013. I’ve been following his work for years and loved the crazy creativity and customisation of drumsets that he does. Playing drums is an expression of yourself; getting crazy with your instrument and how it looks is also a great way to express yourself on stage.” Frank Zumo, Sum41: “I was searching for a company that could create some next-level custom art kits. I met the owner Mike and we started brainstorming. He sent me out a kit to try at rehearsals and then personally delivered me a kit to a show in Boston. I fell in love with the way the drums sounded and played.” Jay Weinberg, Slipknot: “I started playing SJC drums because I was immediately drawn to their creativity and passion for what they do. I saw my own love of the instrument reflected in the care and attention they gave to creating playable pieces of art.”
What makes SJC stand out?
JD: “The company is run by dudes my age or even younger, which is cool ’cos stylistically I think all this stuff is ahead of the curve. They get it. They understand that quality and craftsmanship come first but that style and creativity are a very close second. If I hit them up and asked for a UFO drum kit, they’d be able to create something mind-blowing.” FZ: “They constantly push boundaries and truly create one-of-a-kind drums that continue to change the custom drum kit game.” JW: “SJC’s identity is in the quality of their drums, and how willing and able they are as a company to materialise the most innovative design ideas. Their confidence in delivering a drum based on any artist’s imagination is unparalleled. A large part of my sound is dialling in what I’m able to achieve through SJC drums.”
What’s been the coolest design you’ve worked on with SJC?
JD: “My signature kit for sure. As a kid I always wanted a custom drum kit and to have designed something with my favourite custom drum company is a dream come true.” FZ: “The creation of my custom Shepard Fairey Obey ‘Rise Above’ drum kit. Then we recently had Shepard hand-paint two custom snares and a gong tom for a special performance.” JW: “I’m most proud of what we’ve done to bring together the worlds of art and music by doing live drum paintings. As a visual artist, it’s a great opportunity to create a one-of-one piece of art on an unorthodox canvas – a hollow, cylindrical drum shell.”
