New national drum fair brings vintage treasures to the Midlands this month
Great news for vintage drum enthusiasts, as Simon John’s Vintage Drum Show opens its doors this month to drummers hoping to check out, perhaps buy, or show off their own beautiful vintage gear. The show will be held over the weekend of 30th September to 1st October at the Standard Triumph Club in Coventry and is sure to provide a banquet of vintage drum treats for drum enthusiasts.
A fantastic selection of classic gear on show is set to include kits from Slingerland, Premier, Ludwig, Gretsch, Trixon, Asba, Olympic, Tromsa and more, with the promise of up to 25-30 kits on show at any given time over the weekend.
The non-profit annual event is the successor to the brilliant UK National Drum Fair, which is currently on hiatus. Show organiser Simon John tells us that the show is “organised, promoted and managed by drummers for drummers and aims to provide an opportunity for the display, promotion, trading of drums and drumming skills”.
Simon explains to Rhythm, “Having previously been involved as a committee member of the UK National Drum Fair and my focus being on the vintage side, it seemed a natural course to take as currently the NDF isn’t operating as a show. My role within the National Drum Fair show was stall liaison and the Vintage Vault, and this is one feature that I hope to expand upon.”
Simon tells us reaction to his new show has been phenomenal. “All the stalls are now booked for this year’s show! I’m still getting enquiries from potential stall holders, the response has been fantastic!” Simon adds, “It just proves there’s still a market for a vintage drum show, and in the current climate one which is affordable for both stall holders and the public!”
As well as two days of beautiful vintage drums on display, and the chance to meet
Rhythm’s own gear guru Geoff Nicholls in action checking out kits for his Vintage pages in the mag, the Sunday of the show boasts a truly special event. Tristan Long of the Tornados will be launching a ‘Sixties Drummers And Their Gear’ 2018 calendar in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity. The calendar features photos of Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Scott Ottaway (The Searchers), Barry Witwam (Herman’s Hermits), Lou Rosenthal (The Merseybeats) and Nick Woolgar (The Pacemakers). Well-known drummer and drum educator Lloyd Ryan, who also features in the calendar, will be at the show to give a short presentation and demonstration on a Sakae kit, and will be on hand to sign copies of the calendar.
Simon adds, “The show is a labour of love but it’s for all of us to enjoy, meet up with old friends and make new. The drumming community is still as passionate as its’ ever been and I welcome everyone to make this a great event in the drumming calendar.”
