Hidalgo benefit announced
London show honours percusssion legend
A benefit concert has been announced in aid of legendary percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo.
Sponsored by Latin Percussion (LP) and GEWAM usic, this prestigious night is a not-for-profit benefit concert in honour of Giovanni and his lifetime achievements.
It will feature performances from some of the UK’s top percussionists in what is billed as a night of explosive Afro-Latin jazz-funk. The show will also include the first UK performance from Grammy-winning conga player Hidalgo since 2009.
Born in Puerto Rico in 1963,Hidalgo has enjoyed a successful career which has seen him work with names as diverse as Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Paul Simon, Jack Bruce and Sammy Hagar.
In recent years, the number of occasions on which Hidalgo has been able to perform has been severely limited due to an ongoing battle with diabetes. Earlier this year, a crowdfunding campaign was launched to help cover the cost of Hidalgo’s medical bills and a fundraising benefit concert was held in New York in March.
