Grant Hart RIP
Husker Du man passes
Rhythm is saddened to report the passing of Hüsker Dü’s Grant Hart.
Grant Hart, who was drummer and vocalist for alt rock pioneers Hüsker Dü, has died at the age of 56. Hart’s passing comes following a battle with liver cancer.
Husker Du frontman Bob Mould broke the news on social media:
“The tragic news of Grant’s passing was not unexpected to me,” he said. “My deepest condolences and thoughts to Grant’s family, friends, and fans around the world. Grant Hart was a gifted visual artist, a wonderful storyteller, and a frighteningly-talented musician. Everyone touched by his spirit will always remember.”
Mould and Hart formed Hüsker Dü after meeting at a Minnesota record store in the late 1970s.
In his social media tribute, Mould discussed the pair’s musical relationship.
“The next nine years of my life was spent side-by-side with Grant,” he wrote. “We made amazing music together. We (almost) always agreed on how to present our collective work to the world. When we fought about the details, it was because we both cared. The band was our life. It was an amazing decade.
“We stopped working together in January 1988,” Mould continuted. “We went on to solo careers, fronting our own bands, finding different ways to tell our individual stories. We stayed in contact over the next 29 years — sometimes peaceful, sometimes difficult, sometimes through go-betweens. For better or worse, that’s how it was, and occasionally that’s what it is when two people care deeply about everything they built together.”
The pair, joined by bass player Greg Norton, released six albums before going their separate ways in 1988.
Their influence can be heard in a slew of bands that followed them throughout the ’90s and onwards. Members of Nirvana, Pixies, the Smashing Pumpkins and even Metallica are among those artists to have spoken of their love for the band over the years.
Following the band’s split, Hart moved out from behind the kit and fronted his new band, Nova Mob and embarked on a solo career. He released his last solo work in 2013 with TheArgument album.
Rhythm would like to state our condolences to Hart’s family, friends and bandmates. Grant Hart, 1961-2017.
