MONSTER TRUCK TRUE ROCKERS

Juggernaut drummer powers glam Canadian riff-rock

Rhythm - - BEAT! - (CBu)

You can practically smell the diesel on the muscular rock from the aptly named band, but this four-by-four isn’t just four-to-the-floor. Steve Kiely is a cultured rock drummer; his arsenal of classic rock chops backed up with stickwork finesse. If the drumming could be described as ‘intelligent’, the same can’t be said for the song titles; ‘Thundertruck’, ‘Denim Danger’… you know where they’re going before the first power-chord. Still, the Truck pull their weight among some solid influences, from KISS to QOTSA, The Stooges to Skynryd.

At times, Kiely channels Philthy Phil levels of power, but he can hit the brakes too, adding neat cross-stick and pedal-stepping to ‘Devil Don’t Care’, while ‘Young City Hearts’ has emotive vocals and hooky guitar-lines as Kiely pounds his kit with fearsome fills.
