Rhythm - - BEAT! - Download: ‘One’ Goto:tal (RL)

So much discussion about Metallica’s fourth album is centred on its sound; dry, scooped and layered… and that’s before we even get to Lars and the bizarre lack of audible Jason Newsted bass. Yet there’s a very strong argument that this is their greatest statement; uncompromising, political and their most technical flourish. Before Lars discovered the ‘Snare Of Dreams’ with Bob Rock, he was pushing himself hard – perhaps too hard, he would say now if he tried to tackle the dark breakneck thrash of ‘Dyers Eve’.

This is a remaster rather than the remix some demand – because if they didn’t compromise then, why would they now? And yes, it sounds better; brighter, with greater definition for those double kicks. This is arguably Ulrich’s finest playing, presented at its sonic finest.

A metal classic is made even better
