Never drive through flood water and stay safe Supt Rob Critchlow, Commander, The Hills LAC

FLOODS are destructive events that we can’t do much about. They are rapid flows that have great force.

Floods should not be underestimated and we should never drive through them.

Due to their muddy nature we cannot see beneath them. Also modern cars, even four wheel drives and SUVs, are very well sealed and float. A car can become a boat very quickly and float away. This is a most dangerous situation that causes deaths in nearly every major flooding event.

The advice of the SES and police is unequivocal; never drive though flood water. It is not negotiable as misfortune will follow. When cars are washed away the required rescues are very dangerous for emergency workers, endangering their lives as well. Stay dry and safe and avoid floodwater.
