Sorry, Toovs, but what Eric wants, Eric gets
FORMER SEA EAGLES MENTOR Geoff Toovey came within a whisker of getting the Warriors job after Andrew McFadden was turfed as head coach. As I reported last week, Stephen Kearney was initially reluctant to leave the Broncos, telling the Warriors he was enjoying life in Brisbane as Wayne Bennett’s right-hand man.
That led the Warriors to Toovey, the Manly legend who took the Sea Eagles to a grand final in 2013, and negotiations were well advanced before Warriors owner Eric Watson stepped in.
Watson flew into Auckland after an overseas trip and made Kearney an offer he simply couldn’t refuse, leaving Toovey out in the cold.
