RLW prediction: Bottom third
2016 finish: 11th Coach Mark Gliddon: An influx of playing talent will no doubt help Gliddon mark his third season in charge of the Devils by taking the club to the semis for the first time — and firepower and tackling prowess were a big focus in the offseason: “We played Redcliffe last year and their middle bashed us, so we’ve recruited heavily in that area and bought some quality frontrowers. Our defence was also poor last year and we’ve had a major overhaul there and worked really hard on our ground work and our wrestle. We have to be tougher in the middle.”
Player to watch: “Delouise Hoeter has played seven NRL games for the Tigers and you can tell he’s been well coached. He’s good on the ground and on his feet and I reckon he is the best defensive centre in the comp. Our captain Billy Brittain said to me that every time he jumped down the short side last year, Delouise whacked him. He also competes on every play.”
KEY GAINS: Delouise Hoeter (Townsville Blackhawks), James Taylor (Souths Newcastle), Stephen Coombe (Wynnum Manly), Tama Koopu (Newcastle Knights)
KEY LOSSES: Billy Solah (Wynnum Manly), Jayden Berrell (Wynnum Manly)
DELOUISE THE DESTROYER Hoeter has a reputation for stinging defence.
