Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles

2016 finish: [ Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles] 11th

Rugby League Week - - Nsw Cup -

The coach says: Manly have entered into a partnership with Blacktown Workers for the 2017 NSW Cup season. The new-look Sea Eagles will be coached by Pat Weisner, Blacktown’s Ron Massey Cup mentor from last year, and will play out of H.E. Laybutt Field. With 10 Ron Massey Cup players making the step up this year, Weisner is hoping the Sea Eagles NRL squad fares better in the injury department. “We think we’ll be competitive, but like most teams we’ll be hoping there aren’t many injuries above us and hopefully we can get a good group of NRL players coming back to us each week,” he says. “[Manly’s NRL squad] seems to be a lot more settled this year. Hopefully they don’t have as many injuries at the Nines as they had last year because that set them back a bit and they were always trying to catch up to where they wanted to be.”

Player to watch: Once a highly-promising under-20s player with the Dragons, Charlie Faingaa ( above) has had to start from scratch after leaving the game to become a labourer. He most recently starred with grand finalists Redcliffe in the Queensland Cup. Now he’ll be Weisner’s main enforcer as he targets a first-grade spot with Manly. “Charlie’s got plenty of power, he’s a big boy and he’s been doing really well in the Q Cup. He’s a player we’ll be able to rely on to get us going forward and he’ll be a big chance of breaking into the NRL as well,” Weisner says. KEY GAINS: Lloyd Perrett, Shaun Lane, Cameron Cullen, Akuila Uate KEY LOSSES: Isaac John, Liam Knight, Tony Satini
