Food Fight! Food Fight! Food Fight... For Survival
Lake Kerkini in Northern Greece is one of Europe’s most important wetlands, and normally a bird haven to more than 3,000 different species. However, the winter of 2017 has been extremely cold in Greece, and Lake Kerkini froze earlier and is taking longer to thaw than usual. This is particularly hard on pelicans, which almsot exclusively feed on fish. Each bird needs 1.2 kg a day to survive. The desperate birds fight over every scrap, and loudly squawk for handouts from local fisherman. Yet still, many will die before spring.
