Lightning Produces Diamonds In Saturn’s Interior

-

In 2013, US scientists discovered that diamonds measuring several cm can be produced in Saturn’s interior. When lightning in the upper atmosphere strikes methane molecules, carbon atoms are produced, which combine into soot particles. They fall towards the core, and after about 6,000 km, the pressure is so high that the carbon turns into diamond. Further down, they melt again at temperatures above 8,000 C.
