Why do we grow wis­dom teeth?

The teeth were our an­ces­tors’ pri­mary tools for pul­veris­ing food. Early hu­mans had larger jaws than we do, so there was plenty of room for the wis­dom teeth. In mod­ern hu­mans, the ex­tra set of teeth is not nec­es­sary and of­ten a nui­sance. About 35 % of the pop­u­la­tion do not grow wis­dom teeth.
