Gather is a bricks-and-mortar store on Currumbin Creek Road with a parallel online presence that launched last year with thanks to creative sisters in law, Jan and Sandy Hogg. It’s a delightful blend of raw, crafted and botanical treasures, many of which are made by hand by local Gold Coast and Byron Bay artisans.

“Channeling ‘slow-made, local-made’ where possible, we are always celebrating the imperfect beauty of handmade objects,” Sandy says.

The store features an eclectic mix of ceramics, plants, homewares, furniture, clothing, books, organic skincare products and jewellery. “We love the originality and oneoff aspect of the products we stock,” Jan says. “What stands out to us is that creativity is alive and well here in the southeast with many craftsmen and craftswomen supplying their wares through us. This helps to create an interesting mix of products throughout our store.”

In a literal sense, Gather is physically situated among a gathering of likeminded creatives at Dust Temple. This creative hub is well worth a visit - if not just for a browse through the delightful shelves inside Gather, then to immerse yourself in the complete experience of this shopping precinct.

“We feel very fortunate that Gather is a part of this whole space,” Sandy says. “We get the coolest reactions from people as they discover this creative hub and our shop for the first time. We recently received a handwritten poem composed on a chair in our shop by a customer who stopped by and was so inspired by the space.”

Plants are also a big feature of the Gather space, adding to the store’s beauty. Most are for sale apart from the massive fern hanging in the alleyway that has been the target of much admiration and the focus of many Instagram shots! “Our aim is to provide a range of easy-to-look-after indoor and balcony plants that ensures everyone, even those lacking in the green thumb department, can have greenery in their space,” Sandy says. “Plants bring good energy, help to filter the air and soften the hard inorganic edges prevalent in everyone’s homes.”

Asked why the pair decided to take the leap into small business ownership, they are adamant in their response.

“Of course we are motivated to keep the lights on at home and make a fair wage at the end of the day but, for us, we wanted to achieve that in a way that could also contribute in some way. We provide a vehicle for many immerging new artists and we get to enjoy the creative outlet as well.”
