1891

Os­car Wilde pub­lishes The Fish­er­man and His Soul, a short story that tells of a fish­er­man that falls in love with the mermaid he has caught in his net. Other books be­gin to emerge

1947

The Weeki Wachee Springs Park, lo­cated in Florida, USA, presents its first mermaid show in an un­der­wa­ter the­atre that fea­tured – as it still does today – breath­ing ap­pa­ra­tuses hid­den among the scenery

1984

The film Splash is re­leased, with ac­tress Daryl Han­nah play­ing a mermaid. The film pro­pels the mermaid fig­ure to in­ter­na­tional fame

1989

The Lit­tle Mermaid is re­leased by Walt Dis­ney, based on An­der­sen’s tale. From then on, a se­ries of other books and films are re­leased, bring­ing mer­maids into the lime­light; even Bar­bie en­ters the uni­verse of mer­maids
