Scuba Diver Australasia + Ocean Planet
OCEAN18 FILM FESTIVAL
This year’s film festival highlighted particular marine species that have been affected by human activities. The films included Sharks of the Sulu Sea: Whale
Sharks by LAMAVE, which documents a group of scientists studying large marine vertebrates such as manta rays and whale sharks.
Films such as Plastic Ocean by Craig Leeson and
Sea of Life by Julia Barnes examine the destructive impact our actions are having on marine ecosystems. On a more optimistic note, Patterns of the Ocean by The Jetlagged and Birth of a Marine Park by Victor
Tang both document the successful implementation of marine protected areas in Indonesia and Singapore. Attendees also got to see excerpts about the wonders of coral reefs from the internationally-acclaimed BBC Earth documentary series Blue Planet II.
