Prolific ping pong

The Nagambie Table Tennis winter season has drawn to a close with the traditiona­l doubles tournament and awards night last Wednesday at the Nagambie Mechanics Hall.

After a great season of prolific ping pong perfection from a plethora of proficient proponents, the doubles evening is always a fun way to wind things up before a short break for the school holidays.

The group one prize was awarded to Tatura’s Hank Doller who finished well clear of Kilmorian Rod Kempton and local legend Terry Keenan.

Doller received a $50 voucher donated by the Nagambie Rowing Club.

Ian Clinch took out the group two prize after many close tussles throughout the season against challenger­s such as Christine Schindler, Geoff Trotter, Chris Nanere and Greg Liddell.

Clinch also received a Nagambie Rowing Club $50 voucher for his efforts.

In group three, Seymour’s Alby Evans claimed top spot ahead of Mike Thomas, Dave

POW Avengers hosted the POW Rebels this week, as the Avengers took the win at 6-5.

Rebels’ Darryl Reid threw two tons, Colleen Holley 119 and Tricia Stuart pegged 58.

Avengers’ Terran Crispin threw five tons; Jarrod Duggin 125 and a peg of 89; Jason Hall 105, 100 and a peg of 79.

Avenel played Golf Club Aces, coming down to the last game with Aces the victor.

Avenel highlights include Shannon Jackson throwing 137, 121, 103 and five tons; Rob Welsh four tons; Adam Lynch 140, five tons and a peg of 54; Cotterill, John Bond and David Branagan.

Again this was a toughfough­t group with many challenger­s for the prize, but Evans’ silky smooth dance footwork and regular attendance over the course of the season earned him a $50 voucher from Paul and Emilia at Nagambie’s Royal Mail Hotel.

Group four also saw a close finish with quite a few players in the mix for the final $50 voucher, again with thanks to the Top Pub.

Foundation member Vonnie Deering held on to win the prize with steady and consistent performanc­es over the season against Avenel’s Clyde Jochheim, Ruffy’s Barb Trainer and local warriors Reg Dickinson, Deb Clinch and Wally Grinpukel, just to mention a few.

Twelve players took part in the doubles tournament and were graded into six teams to play for the holy grail of table tennis prizes — large tubs of chocolates.

Many thanks to IGA for the continued chocolate support each season — and this lot are sure to be Rick Wylie 140, 100 and a peg of 66.

Aces’ Adrian Blacker threw two 140s and five tons; Rob Ridgewell 140, 120 and two tons; Daniel Raynor threwAC1N8­0,93tw50o7 tons and a peg of 72; Mark Jones two 140s, three tons and a peg of 60.

Royal Rascals played home to Broadford Mustangs.

Mustangs took a solid win of 7-4.

Rascals’ Brendan Rogers threw 100 and a peg of 91; Stuart Crockett 100. enjoyed by the slick doubles combinatio­n of Ian Clinch and Chris Nanere who managed to remain undefeated for the night to claim the spoils.

The spring competitio­n will start on Wednesday, October 5 and will continue each Wednesday night from 7 pm at Nagambie Mechanics Hall until the Mustangs’ Peter Myles threw 140, 111, eight tons and a peg of 56; Kerry Cunningham 127; Emily Wills 120 and three tons; Bruce Cunningham two tons and a peg of 71.

POW Misfits and Railway Renegades had a close game, Misfits winning 6-5.

Renegades’ Daniel Kilroy threw 100, Graeme Hogg pegged 70, Roy Kilroy two tons and a peg of 76.

Misfits’ Geoff Maggs threw 105 and a peg of 67, Beau Maggs 138 and 100, Noel Whitling two tons and Michelle Halfpenny 112. December school holidays.

Thursday evening social play will possibly begin in October as well, depending on numbers.

Avenel

The opening day for season 2016-17 dawned and the weather was not kind to us having rained overnight and the constant threat of more to come.

Thanks to members and guests who attended.

Although we didn’t venture onto the green, the official rolling of the first jack and bowling of the first bowl were carried out by club sponsors Jeff and Linda Newton inside the clubhouse.

Those present enjoyed a cuppa, afternoon tea and a general catch up. Midweek starts on September 27, with the Saturday competitio­n two weeks later.
