It was close but no cigar for Nagambie on Saturday, falling three goals short of a premiership after a slow start proved costly against Tallygaroopna.
The Redlegs were warm favourites going into the contest and looked to be on top early when they jumped out to a four-goal advantage at quarter time but the Lakers showed plenty of spirit to outscore the minor premiers in the second term and cut the margin to just two goals.
A 9-9 third quarter was an enthralling start to the second half and it looked like Nagambie might be able to produce a reversal of their onegoal defeat against Tallygaroopna in the semi-final just two weeks earlier.
However, it wasn’t to be with the Lakers being outscored by one goal in the final period to ensure a Redlegs victory.
Trish Sporle was exceptional in defence and squared off against star shooter Bree Boyle, while goal-attack Rebecca Comi did all she could forward of centre with 21 goals.
A number of positional changes were experimented with in an attempt to chase down Tallygaroopna but it was to no avail.
Score: Tallygaroopna 37 d Nagambie 34.
