Horse capital youngsters ready for the ring

- By Cathy Walker Nagambie’s Hillside Thoroughbreds’ bloodstock manager Peter Ford says this filly by NZ champion Dundeel has everything it takes to be a top racehorse.

Nagambie, Seymour and Avenel horse farms once again have a strong hand in the fourday Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, which begins on Sunday at Oaklands Junction near Tullamarine Airport.

Selling company Inglis nominated relations to class gallopers such as The Quarterback, Not Listenin’tome, Tiamo Grace, Palentino and Defcon as headliners of a memorable catalogue for 2017.

A total of 771 yearlings have been catalogued for sale, including 54 relations to Group winners — nine Group One victors — and 52 progeny of Group winners, 13 of which won at the highest level.

Highlighting the diversity of the catalogue, 109 individual stallions are represented, headed by Written Tycoon (30 lots), Fiorente and Pierro (29), Shamus Award and Helmet (23), Reward For Effort (22), High Chaparral (21) and Sebring and I Am Invincible (20).

And in the ever-hopeful world of the thoroughbred enthusiast, there are 19 ‘first season’ sires. As well as Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente and Cox Plate victor Shamus Award, stallions such as Fighting Sun (19), Zoustar (17), Epaulette (15) and Unencumbered (13) could become the next big thing once their first progeny hit the racetracks late in the year.

Nagambie’s Swettenham Stud, with 38 youngsters ready to send to Oaklands Junction, has the second-largest draft of horses in the Premier Sale behind Romsey’s Supreme Thoroughbreds.

Other vendors with big drafts include Tylden’s Woodside Park (33), Rosemont Stud at Ceres (32) and Blue Gum Farm at Euroa (31).

The sale begins on Sunday and runs until next Wednesday.
