Croquet club mourns loss of two popular members

Seymour Telegraph - - LOCAL CLASSIES -

Our monthly meeting was held on July 3 with five members present and apologies from two.

Our meeting started on a sad note, remembering two of our members who passed away in June.

Cynthia Neubecker left us on June 9 and Sue Dunstone on June 27. Both will be missed in our club and the wider croquet community.

Cynthia had just started to learn and enjoy the game when she became ill about four years ago.

She still took part in the social side and helped with her daughter Bronwyn to sell many a ticket on our pub raffles.

Sue had great success in being our club champion in Association Croquet, winning the Goulburn Valley region championship and then going on to the regional, playing against other regions in Victoria.

She also held all positions on our committee over the years. I think treasurer was her favourite.

Both Sue and her husband Max also collated the pub raffle meeting dates and delivered them, which helps all clubs in the town who attend these meetings.

Sue and Max did many odd jobs around the club, with Sue dobbing Max in to put a screw here or there, or to build something.

Sue and Cynthia will be well remembered.

Two members went to Euroa last week for a Golf Croquet soup and bun day.

There was a little rain in the morning but it fined up in the afternoon for a couple of enjoyable games.

Some members are also going to Mooroopna and Echuca social days in the next two weeks, then the real battles begin.

Our season opening will be held at Shepparton on July 24, then the pennant season will start on July 26, so there will be some cold hands and toes for the first few weeks.

We have a yearly battle with Euroa for the Solstice Cup. This is normally played late in June, but it has been deferred to August this year.

It will be golf croquet instead of association when it is played at a date to be decided.

It will be played at Nagambie, so we would look forward to seeing some spectators when the date is announced.

Anyone interested in joining our club or coming for a try, phone Val on 5794 2353 or Wendy on 5793 8335.

You will be made welcome, and the jug is always on for a nice hot drink in this cool weather.
