Many degrees of flexibility

Seymour Telegraph - - NEWS - By Lewis Fischer

Rebecca Board runs a successful cleaning business.

She even has a number of employees that work with her.

Success by definition shouldn’t come overnight but more often than not people face additional barriers when living in regional areas.

Ms Board recently graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Management from Federation University.

As a young mother, regularly commuting to complete traditional university study wasn’t a viable option.

The program at Federation University has been developed in order to break down the barriers people face in obtaining a threeyear undergraduate degree.

Through an agreement with the Goulburn Ovens TAFE in Seymour, Ms Board was able to complete her degree without setting foot on a university campus.

‘‘It’s a practical degree that will turn a Diploma or Advanced Diploma into an undergraduate degree with just one extra year of fulltime study,’’ GOTAFE business commercial manager Jo-Ann Craig said.

‘‘It’s been designed around working professionals, taking into account the experiences gained from their working lives and allows students to study while still working full time.’’

Ms Board was able to complete the course online but had regular liaison with a local GOTAFE program co-ordinator in Seymour.

‘‘This gives regional students greater access and availability to higher education programs,’’ Federation University’s media adviser Matthew Freeman said.

‘‘It’s a really great program that can help our business leaders improve their competitive advantage and just generally enhance our community,’’ Ms Board said.

At this stage, the Bachelor of Applied Management is the only program offered in this way through the partnership with GOTAFE.

Achievement: Rebecca Board on her graduation day.
