The spotlight will shine on local youth at a blue light disco in Broadford next month.

The event, for primary and secondary school-aged students, will have a UV theme, with those attending encouraged to wear white on the night.

The disco will be held on August 11 and will be run by local police, the Mitchell FReeZA committee, Mitchell Shire Council’s youth service team and volunteers.

It will feature music and a free slushy machine, while hot dogs will be available for purchase.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said recent blue light discos in the shire had been great successes.

‘‘As well as providing our young community members with a night of fun and dancing, blue light discos are really valuable crime prevention initiatives and help kids engage with police,’’ she said.

Senior Constable Ryan Colman said blue light discos were great ways for police to get to know young members of the community better.

‘‘They are great opportunities for the kids to have a good time in a safe and friendly environment, and at the same time see that police are just normal people and that we’re here to help,’’ he said.

The blue light disco is on August 11 at the Broadford Shire Hall from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm (primary school) and 8 pm to 10 pm (secondary school). Entry is $6.
