Walk to school program

Seymour Telegraph - - NEWS -

Attention all primary students — it’s time to lace up your shoes and get on your feet.

VicHealth’s Walk to School program will stroll into town this October, and Mitchell Shire Council has teamed up with local primary schools to deliver a range of activities that encourage families to walk, ride or scoot to school.

Thanks to a $20 000 grant from VicHealth, this year Council is introducing new Walk to School maps for three of the shire’s primary schools — to be announced soon.

The maps will detail safe drop-off points, where students can then walk the rest of the way to school.

The popular Pedometer Challenge, where people are encouraged to walk as many steps as possible throughout the month, will also be a part of the campaign.

‘‘The Walk to School program has so many health and wellbeing benefits — students getting active and learning healthy habits for life — but it also gives them the chance to spend some quality time connecting with their family and friends while they walk to class,’’ Mitchell Shire Mayor Rhonda Sanderson said.

‘‘Council is delighted to once again support the Walk to School initiative and strongly encourages students and their families to participate in this free, easy and fun campaign.’’

VicHealth chief executive Jerril Rechter said last year more than 144 000 children from more than 750 schools took park in Walk to School.

‘‘Together they walked more than 2.2 million km — the equivalent of walking almost 55 times around the world,’’ Ms Rechter said.

Not only is participating in Walk to School and the Pedometer Challenge a great way to encourage regular physical activity, there are some great prizes up for grabs including:

A $150 Coles or Woolworths voucher to spend on a healthy morning tea or breakfast for the first three primary schools in Mitchell Shire to register for Walk to School.

A FitBit for the male and female student that walks the most steps during the Pedometer Challenge.

A $300 Rebel voucher for the school that tallies the most steps during Walk to School.
