John’s kicking goals

Seymour Telegraph - - NEWS -

After helping Nagambie kids learn to play football for the past seven years, John McKeown has been awarded the 2017 Goulburn Murray Coaches Association’s Auskick Centre of the Year award.

McKeown said he was humbled to receive the award, which was presented to him at the 30th Annual Goulburn Murray Coaches Association dinner, held at Cobram Barooga Golf Club on October 1.

‘‘Being acknowledged for the contribution I’ve made to the young kids in Nagambie is a great honour,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s very easy to come out on a Saturday morning when you’ve got 25-30 kids sitting their looking at you with a big smile on their face, so enthusiastic and they cant wait to get involved and get a footy in their hands.’’

McKeown said it was also a great honour to meet the guest speaker for the night, football legend Peter ‘‘Crackers’’ Keenan, who was also the guest at the association’s first dinner in 1987.

“It was amazing to meet ‘Crackers’ in person, he’s such a ruckman, a giant . . . I felt like a small kid standing next to him,’’ McKeown said.

Big time: John McKeown gets to meet Peter ‘‘Crackers’’ Keenan.
