Be prepared for fire season

- By Stephanie Horton

The 2017-2018 Fire Danger Period will officially begin in the Mitchell and Strathbogie shires on Monday.

This is the time, if residents have not yet done so, to clean up their homes and prepare for the upcoming season.

In fact, according to District 12 operations officer Charlie Cleary, the season has already begun.

‘‘The fire fuel, such as grass, is already dry,’’ he said. ‘‘Ensure your home is prepared. ‘‘Some ways to do that include reducing the fuel levels through slashing, mowing or other means.’’

Residents should familiarise themselves with what they can and can’t do during the fire danger period and on Total Fire Ban days.

‘‘Everyone — whether you are in town or in the regional areas — should also establish a fire plan, if they don’t already have one,’’ Mr Cleary said.

‘‘And if residents are burning off, make sure they abide by the council by-laws and record their burn with the burn-off registration line on 1800 668 511.

‘‘Residents should also make sure of the weather, including the wind and that they have the sufficient resources for their burn.’’
