CWA Central steps up

Seymour Telegraph - - NEWS - Huntington.

The Country Women’s Association has served the Seymour and surrounding community for more than 88 years, and will continue to do so with a change in local branches.

While the founding branch closed in September, the comingof-age Seymour Central branch has quickly stepped in to continue the work of the members who came before them to benefit the lives of women and children over the decades.

Entering its fifth year, the Seymour Central branch held its annual general meeting on Thursday and saw one of its newest members elected president.

Kristel Huntington will take over from outgoing president Sarah Barnbrook, who completed her two-year term while also taking on the duty as president of the CWA Hume Goulburn Group.

This has been a time of growth for the Seymour Central branch, which has seen an influx of new members — many of whom have transferred from the former Seymour branch.

This has added depth in the knowledge of CWA traditions and practices.

The shift in branches has also empowered the newer branch to expand the CWA’s presence in Seymour, knowing it carries the legacy of so many women who have contributed greatly to the district.

The past year has seen the branch’s monthly Saturday bake stalls in Station St become a popular fixture, with the homebaked goods selling out by noon.

The monthly craft sessions have also been well received and continue to grow in attendance.

There will be one more craft session for the year, starting at 7 pm on November 22, at the Seymour and District Community House in Anglesey St. This session is open to the public.

The Seymour Central branch will again be hosting the annual bus trip to the CWA Christmas Fair on December 2. The Christmas Fair is held at the CWA of Victoria headquarters, the historic Umina mansion in Toorak.

Those travelling on the bus will also have a chance to visit the Scandinavian Christmas Bazaar, a block from Umina, before the return trip to Seymour.

Also open to the public, the bus will depart from Seymour at 8.30 am, stopping at Tallarook, Broadford, Kilmore and Wallan.

Tickets are $30 and include snacks, a door prize, games and much more.
